The plot starts with the Hoover family supporting Olive in her dream of becoming a beauty queen. Having qualified for the Little Miss Sunshine pageant in California, the Hoover family go on a road trip from New Mexico to California. Along the way, as they encounter mechanical issues with the van, the family’s relationship is revealed and tested. 

 

Thelma and Louise 

Directed by Ridley Scott and written by Callie Khouri, Thelma and Louise came out in 1991. Thelma and Louise embark on a road trip to escape from their daily lives. At one stop, Thelma was about to be raped when Louise steps in to save her and eventually kills him. Afraid of being caught, they make a run for it and change their itinerary. The police eventually caught up with them. Instead of surrendering, they decide to drive their car off a cliff. 

 

Rain Man 

Rain Man was written by Barry Morrow and Ronald Bass and directed by Barry Levinson. Charlie had not seen his father for a long time but when the latter died, Charlie finds out about an older brother he never knew and that majority of his father’s money will go to fund a mental institution, where his brother, Ray, stays. He tries different tactics to be able to control the money. They embark on a road trip together, from Ohio to California. As Charlie gets to know Ray more, his intentions change and decides that his relationship with Ray is more important than the inheritance. 

 

Y Tu Mama Tambien 

Alfonso Cuaron helms this Mexican drama based on the story he co-wrote with his brother, Carlos. Y Tu Mama Tambien received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay in 2002. Teenagers Julio and Tenoch go on a road trip with Tenoch’s cousin’s wife. They travel across Mexico, not really sure of their destination. During the trip, Tenoch and Julio’s relationship became tense as they both admitted to having sex with each other’s girlfriends. Down the line, they eventually have a threesome and things became more awkward between the 2 friends. When they got back, they slowly drifted apart.  

 

Blues Brothers 

John Landis directs and co-writes the musical comedy, The Blues Brothers. Dan Aykroyd co-writes and stars in the movie, alongside John Belushi. Jake and Elwood go on a road trip to gather their bandmates to earn money to save their old orphanage. Along the way, they were chased by the police for Elwood’s unpaid traffic violations, by a band they had an altercation with, and the people they ran off a bridge. After performing at one hotel, a record producer offered them enough money to pay for the taxes and their IOUs. They run to meet the deadline. As soon as they paid the tax bill, the police finally caught up with them and arrested them.
